The people behind Uptime Notes
Owen Pratt
Founding editor
Owen Pratt started Uptime Notes in 2022 after years of running personal servers, going back to a Pentium 4 tower that doubled as a space heater under his desk. He splits his time between a home lab with a rotating cast of mini PCs and a handful of VPS boxes he manages for client work, and he rebuilds his monitoring stack from scratch every year or two just to see what breaks. He writes most of the hosting, Linux internals, and postmortem pieces because those are the systems he is elbow deep in on a given weekend.
Niels Brandt
Hardware writer
Niels Brandt spent eleven years as an electrician before he started building NAS boxes and quiet home servers on the side, and he now writes about the hardware he would actually put under his own desk. He keeps three old mini PCs in a closet just to test how long drives last under constant write loads, and he has tracked every fan failure in a spreadsheet since 2019. He covers hardware builds and the monitoring setups that tell you when that hardware is about to fail.
Rosalind Petrie
Monitoring and reference writer
Rosalind Petrie spent six years on a support team reading other people's log files for a living, which is how she became the person who can tell a syslog line from a JSON log line at a glance. She writes the reference material and most of the monitoring and backup guides, and she keeps a running list of every log format she has had to parse by hand so nobody else has to guess at the fields. She tests every backup guide by actually restoring from it before she publishes it, not just by running the backup step.
